Now Hiring: Breastfeeding Peer Counselor

Breastfeeding can be one of the most rewarding—and overwhelming—experiences of early motherhood. For many new moms, having someone who truly understands the journey can make all the difference. That’s where a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor comes in.

Breastfeeding peer counselors play a vital role in supporting and encouraging mothers as they navigate feeding their babies. Through shared experiences, compassionate listening, and practical guidance, peer counselors help build confidence, reduce feelings of isolation, and improve breastfeeding success. Sometimes, simply knowing “someone else has been there” is exactly what a mother needs to keep going.

This position is ideal for mothers who have experience breastfeeding and feel called to encourage and support others along the way. As a Breastfeeding Peer Counselor with the Pike County Health Department, you will work closely with our Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program, connecting with local families through breastfeeding support groups, one-on-one outreach, education, and referrals to additional resources when needed. Your support can help turn uncertainty into confidence and challenges into positive, empowering experiences for new mothers.

Position Details:

  • Openings: Full-Time or Part-Time
  • Benefits: Full-Time position includes agency benefits
  • Flexible work schedule

Qualifications:

  • Must have breastfed an infant for at least six months within the past two years
  • Willing to provide compassionate breastfeeding support through a warm line, available to mothers during evenings and weekends when help is needed most
  • Strong communication, computer, and organizational skills
  • A genuine desire to support, educate, and encourage other mothers

If you are passionate about breastfeeding, enjoy helping others, and want to make a meaningful impact in the lives of local families, we encourage you to apply. This is more than a job—it’s an opportunity to support healthier mothers, healthier infants, and a stronger community.
